You do not need any special knowledge or skills to take part in the Birding Week. However you must be at least 16 years old. The guides speak all English and partly German as well . But we point out that it is advantageous if you understand a little bit English.

The daily hikes range from leisurely walks, to sometimes steep ascents, and it can also lead along stony paths. So you do not have to be a trained mountaineer, but you should bring some level of fitness with you.

Please note as well that most activities depend of favourable weather and activities according to given plans might be subjected to change, if conditions are not favourable.

The Knuckles Range is one of the most interesting and important places in Sri Lanka for birdwatching and ornithologists and so also called the Knuckles Conservation Forest. It is an UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.

The range is home to up to 128 Bird species of which 17 are endemic which makes it to a birding hot spot. The total number of endemics in Sri Lanka is 27! Some of the Knuckles specials are the yellow-fronted barbet, dusky-blue flycatcher, ceylon lorikeet, ceylon grackle, yellow-eared bulbul and Layard’s parakeet. We ourselves are passionate birders and advise everyone to get involved in it once. There is no other activity in nature that brings you so close to these beautiful creatures and sharpens your senses. It is not unusual to meet other residents of all kinds, big and small, while looking for birds and you will be surprised how beautiful and versatile nature is.

On our daily excursions we will discover different ecosystems and explore new areas.

With sunrise, we will wake you up early in the morning. After a light breakfast of tea or coffee, juice and biscuits, we head straight out for the first hike of the day. Over the week, we will explore different areas and ecosystems. So you might head into the cloud forest, into the tea fields, to breathtaking waterfalls or some secret and favourite birding spots of our guides. After about 3-4 hours we have an extensive brunch at the camp and we can relax a bit and let the impressions of the morning sink before around 2pm a light lunch is waiting for us. Shortly thereafter and freshly strengthened we head out on the afternoon activity. The afternoon activity is usually a bit shorter than the one in the morning and invites you to look for a good birding place and to observe it intensively. However, there is no fixed program for us as well as nature, and nature usually dictates to us what we are allowed to experience on each individual day. That's what makes it so exciting!

Before the sun goes down we will reach the camp again and a generous dinner awaits us.

Thereafter we let the day comfortably end with a pleasant campfire at our beautiful viewpoint before a new exciting day is waiting for us.

During your stay you will be accommodated in one of our two or four bed cabins. The cabins have a bathroom with a hot shower. If you are travelling on your own you might have to share your room with another person of same genger if you have not booked a double room for single use.

A small terrace give you the opportunity to relax and listen to all the birds around you with no disturbance.

Our camp is located in the middle of a small forest and the animals and especially the birds are already used to us being in camp. Whoever is patient and observes can already hope for a few unique bird experiences right outside the door.
